Design in interior architecture is examining ways of how we can use space in innovative ways. By examining our surroundings and studying the behaviour of people as they move through those surroundings, we are able to improve the users experience as they engage with and in it. The common thread that links the diverse disciplines of design as I learn to use different methods and systems of thinking, is the methodology behind service design. To be considerate of the different histories, genders, races, cultures and experiences that both the human and non-human bring to a place of interaction. It is important that we question how we can explore a world beyond just as they appear to us, to be curious and address the bigger picture. While we may visually appreciate a work of art or a product of design in it's elementary state, we occasionally neglect the minor aspects that comprise the whole. I have also determined that our role as designs and creators is to be aware and open to the potential of change. Our ideas may be envisioned differently to the products we produce and change in unexpected ways.
"To be curious is to be constantly HUMBLE and open to learning more. It's knowing when to STOP and listen."
Systems thinking revolves around looking at objects, environments, spaces from a different perspective. It is our responsibility as designers to breakdown the larger picture in order to identify the smaller pieces that make up the whole. The relevance of investigating the intractate systems that create networks to contemporary designers is that now, more than ever, sustainability in design has become important for the future generations of design. Our ecological footprints have an impact on the environment, whether slight or substantial. The consequences of design has become a prevalent topic that often raises concern in relation the global climate crisis. Cultivating natural resources and manufacturing new materials has long inflicted harm on our ecosystems, distorting how we interact with the non-human. Systems thinking allows us to think beyond the aesthetic drive of the design process, rather, we are aware of the relations, patterns and operations of how practice design. This methodology can be applicable in the process thinking of my practice in interior architecture as I will need to consider the effects of how my applications of design will impact both the human and non-human aspects. Examining the functions and interacts of. how different systems interact with each other will be imperative to creating safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly spaces. These systems may, for example, include air quality and flow in an outdoor or interior space and how this may affect the mood of people within that environment, how do animals move in and out of the space.
"Consider the next largest context."
