Scarves Made in India

In a 3 week study abroad trip to Gujarat, India, I explored and learned about the traditional crafts of the Kutch region. While working side by side with masters and graduates in design from Kala Raksha, I was able to learn about each of their focusses - block printing, weaving, batik, bandhani, embroidery and patchwork. After visiting each of the artisan’s villages, and learning about the process of each of these techniques, we collaborated, designed and made our own scarves together. The first scarf was a collaboration between Irfan Khatri and I in block printing. We used traditional block patterns which are hundreds of years old, but in a new and innovative design. The second scarf was a collaboration between Monyhi ben, Varsha ben and I. This collaboration is especially unique because Soof and Rabari embroidery have never been combined into one piece before as they are here.
