Making It - Cork/Hue Tables by Deadgood Studio

Furniture
‘Deadgood’ has always been so much more than just a name; it’s a benchmark for everything we create, everything we stand for and everything that we (as a company) aspire to be. Quite simply if it’s not Deadgood then we don’t put our name to it.

At the heart of this philosophy lies a commitment to quality, precision and innovation. We aim to put a unique stamp on the market place by fully investigating a products application, the benefits of specific material choices and the efficiencies and challenges that our chosen manufacturing processes present us with.
In true Deadgood style, it is the culmination of these values that led our in house design studio to develop our latest range of Coffee and Side Tables, aptly named ‘Cork Tables’.

The inspiration behind the Cork Tables came from the damage that can occur to table tops through heavy usage and general wear and tear. We set ourselves a brief to create a range of tables for commercial and domestic use which were both durable and functional and that responded to these specific needs.
Cork offers a distinct practicality and can often be associated with placemats or drinks coasters. Naturally we made a connection and wanted to utilise this ‘scratch resistant’ material to create a unique design that met the needs of the user. The beauty of cork sheet is that it is eye catching, durable and readily available at much more affordable prices than solid or moulded cork. The variations of cork sheet are endless, however we managed to find a particular type of material that had found its home in high end yacht interiors (a fact which provided extra promise for our water resistance requirements). This ‘Rubberised Cork’ offered the strength and practicality that we needed to move the design forward.

The tables have been featured widely in the design press with mentions on Dezeen and most recently in Homes & Gardens Magazine. At the heart of this philosophy lies a commitment to quality, precision and innovation. Traditionally, notice boards are made using cork sheet laminated to MDF, however we wanted to build upon this notion and add substantial strength by combining quality Birch Plywood with cutting edge CNC manufacture, in turn creating a ‘sandwich’ of two layers of cork supporting a plywood core.

We developed the design by creating individual interlocking legs, which helped to strengthen the structure and optimised the efficiency of producing out of individual laminated sheets. This allowed us to reduce waste and keep the costs to a minimum and what’s more, by rounding and lacquering the profile of the plywood we minimised the risk of edge damage whilst highlighting the beauty, precision and quality of this widely used yet understated material.

As a further development to the range, we have recently launched the ‘Hue Table’ for sale online in the Deadgood pop-up shop. Drawing on the same manufacturing principles but providing the opportunity to integrate a broader appeal in terms of colour choice, we are now presenting the product in a choice of either Black or Turquoise ‘Formica’ laminates.

Much like the original choice of material (cork), the Formica laminates are both durable and practical and have provided the ideal opportunity to extend this curious little product family even further.
