Gambar Theater

Gambar Theater is an opera house based in Victoria BC, Canada. The theater was inaugurated on 12 August 1987 and soon became the most famous opera house in Victoria. Many great Italian, French artists and finest singers from around the world, have appeared at Gambar Theater. The theater comprises multiple performance venues, which together host well over 1,200 performances annually, attended by more than a million people.
To keep the theater's identity renowned and applicable, we helped Gambar Theater in creating the new visual identity and branding. We experimented with a lot of creative ideas and ended up with a simple solution that makes the visual image of the theater more distinctive, memorable and stand out among many theaters in Canada and internationally.

Gambar Theater est un opéra basé à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, au Canada. Le théâtre a été inauguré le 12 août 1987 et est rapidement devenu l’opéra le plus célèbre de Victoria. Beaucoup de grands artistes italiens, Français et les meilleurs chanteurs du monde entier, ont apperared au Théâtre Gambar. Le théâtre comprend plusieurs salles de spectacle, qui accueillent ensemble plus de 1200 représentations par an, auxquelles assistent plus d’un million de personnes.
Pour garder l’identité du théâtre renommée et applicable, nous avons aidé Gambar Theater à créer la nouvelle identité visuelle et la nouvelle image de marque. Nous avons expérimenté beaucoup d’idées créatives et nous nous sommes retrouvés avec une solution simple qui rend l’image visuelle du théâtre plus distinctive, mémorable et se démarque parmi de nombreux théâtres au Canada et à l’étranger.
Logo Concept

The previous logo mark was very complex and hard to read. The type used in the logo was stretched and less visible. The theater was facing some printing issues with the advertising because the logo was inconsistent and difficult to print at small scales.
Our challenge was to create an effective and memorable mark for the theater that distinguishes it from others. Therefore, by close analysis of the theater's history and personality for 2 months we came up with a logo that signifies a strong, bold and dynamic identity for Gambar Theater. The new logo is a simple rectangular shaped mark with circular negative space in the center. The rectangle is like a stage with spotlight in the middle. The rectangle and the negative circular shape creates a visual contrast which creates endless meanings and ideas for the logo.

La marque du logo précédent était très complexe et difficile à lire. Le type utilisé dans le logo était étiré et moins visible. Le théâtre était confronté à des problèmes d’impression avec la publicité parce que le logo était incohérent et difficile à imprimer à petite échelle.
Notre défi était de créer une marque efficace et mémorable pour le théâtre qui le distingue des autres. Par conséquent, en analysant de près l’histoire et la personnalité du théâtre pendant 2 mois, nous avons mis au point un logo qui signifie une identité forte, audacieuse et dynamique pour gambar Theater. Le nouveau logo est une simple marque de forme rectangulaire avec un espace négatif circulaire au centre. Le rectangle est comme une scène avec un projecteur au milieu. Le rectangle et la forme circulaire négative créent un contraste visuel qui crée des significations et des idées infinies pour le logo.
Typography

The typeface used in the previous logo was stretched and less readable. That's why we wanted to use a typeface that's easy to read and appropriate for the theater's personality. Therefore, for the new visual identity a serif typeface named Hermann is used, which is very legible and bold. It gives a great visual contrast to the geometrical symbol.

La police de caractères utilisée dans le logo précédent était étirée et moins lisible. C’est pourquoi nous avons voulu utiliser une police de caractères facile à lire et adaptée à la personnalité du théâtre. Par conséquent, pour la nouvelle identité visuelle, une police de caractères à empattement nommée Hermann est utilisée, qui est très lisible et audacieuse. Il donne un grand contraste visuel au symbole géométrique.
