padharo mhare desh // welcome to my land

a photoset & visual journal from my trip to the very essence of India, the archetypal land of royal families and medieval forts, golden arid deserts and city of lakes, huge palaces and buzzing handicraft bazaars, warm welcoming folk and kaleidoscopic festivals.

Rajasthan, my native state, is a celebratory land of vibrant culture. Punctuated with well preserved, grand architecture from a bygone era, the state also boasts of well-developed cities that still follow the old architecture, offering an eclectic style you will only find here, and is something that you can only experience first hand. A mélange of traditional dance, music, camel rides, safaris and colorful cities, there's so much to witness. Whether you identify as a culture aficionado, a traveler, a photographer or a history buff, this place will stay with you long after you depart. I took a road trip covering Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur & Jaisalmer and here are some of my favorite snapshots from the journey.

the doors of rajasthan
the blue city of jodhpur / theories: some say the Brahmins painted their homes blue to differentiate their status in the city; others believe that many citizens of Jodhpur were followers of the blue-skinned deity Lord Shiva and therefore honored him by painting their homes blue. It is also said that locals painted their homes blue because they believed it reflected the heat thereby keeping their homes cooler & also keeping the termites away.
the golden city of jaisalmer / " yellow sandstone is used consistently throughout the architecture of the town, including every house, fort, monument or corner store; imbuing the city with a certain golden-yellow light
panna meena ka kund / a historic stepwell & rainwater catchment known for its picturesque symmetrical stairways
hawa mahal / palace of winds: honeycombed hive-like architectural landmark with small jharokhas or windows that provide great air circulation
a kalbelia performer at the sam sand dunes; invites tourists to dance along with her as her troupe plays upbeat music
a ravanhatta player outside the amer fort
traditional kathputhli dolls (string puppet theatre, native to rajasthan)
phenomenal intricate ceiling hand-carvings in one of the jain temples within the vicinity of jaisalmer fort
the various folk dances of rajasthan being performed at a cultural show in jaisalmer- kalbelia, ghoomar, fire dance or chari and bhavai (balancing multiple pots as they dance nimbly with the soles of their feet perched on the top of a glass bottle or on the edge of the sharp objects)
Thankyou!
