12 Gauge Seedshot

Urban Roots Group Exhibition - 323East Gallery
  • I created this piece for a group exhibition this past fall at 323East Gallery in Royal Oak, MI. Urban Roots is a film about the urban farming movement happening in Detroit, and was directed by my friend Mark McGinnis. The opening coincided with the fall harvest, and over 25 artists from around the country participated in the exhibition.

I took some spent shells that I had previously fired from my own 12gauge pump shotgun and filled them with leftover seeds. I closed them all back up, and placed inside some  hand-stenciled boxes I made. The pot is all hand painted with actual beats growing inside. Added a couple targets and arranged them all on a burlap covered pedestal. My little shotty can also be seen posing for the camera.

Bullets are made to kill, and my thought for this piece was to turn them from something that takes life, to something that creates it.
