With a background as president of Ramapo College of New Jersey, Dr. Rodney D. Smith presently serves as the University of The Bahamas (UB) president and CEO. Since assuming the position in 2014, Dr. Rodney D. Smith has guided a number of transformative projects, from technology upgrades to sustainability research.

In April 2021, the University of The Bahamas brought together more than 350 participants in an event that continued a four-year annual tradition and met the mandates of pandemic-era social distancing. The Virtual UBFIT Fun Run Walk Bike Skate Push 5K/10K race involved people from various islands, including Exuma, Andros, and Long Island, completing a racecourse of five or 10 kilometers on their own.

Taking part with family members and in small groups, participants had their progress and results tracked via an app. Those who successfully ran the required distance between April 9th and 11th were awarded a finisher’s medal. Beyond community building, the aim of the run is to raise funds for charitable initiatives, and corporate sponsors such as the Oaktree Medical Center supported the event. The money raised in 2021 went to the COVID-19 Technology Relief Fund, as well as an annual fund that provides students with limited finances with tablets and laptops.
