My friends and I had a little beer brewing operation while we were in Grad School. Our friends would pick out a recipe and buy the ingredients. On the weekends, we'd brew up a few 5-gallon batches. After a few weeks of fermentation and settling, we'd deliver the beer to our friends, who would always give us a few sixers for our effort. We got to experiment with loads of new beers we wouldn't otherwise make and-most improtantly-got free beer.
