Chess Set
Chess is the board game that can be changed. The Origin of the Chess was Chaturanga, and time goes by, Its shape and rule got changed. So I think that Chess looks like a tangible game but It actually intangible one that can be changed by each place or culture. So with this base, I want to design the chess that can express Korea's tradition and shape.
Chess Pieces.
KING / IKSEONGWAN
There were various type of crown in Joseon, but I want to express shape of benevolent king's Image. So I used the image of King Sejong. He is well known as a wise king, and also famous for inventing Hangeul.
QUEEN / DaesuMeori
Queen of Joseon had lots of hair style. She actually put the Gache(big wig) on her head and tied with own hair. All kind of hairstyle had its own beauty, but DaesuMeori is most fancy and gorgeous because it was used for royal wedding.
BISHOP / Jeongjagwan
Bishop's form seems to have been motivated by the priest's hat 'mitre'. Joseon revered the 'Neo-Confucianism' and Seonbi(Scholar) was the represent of intellectuals who studied it. And Jeongjagwan was their usual hat.
KNIGHT / ganjuhyeong helmet (General Helmet)
Joseon had lots of Janggun(Military officer) their achievement are still talked about. And by and large, the generals wore the ganjuhyeong(conical shape) helmet. Representatively, there is Admiral 'Yi Sunsin' and I motivated by him.
ROOK / BONGSUDAE
Origin of Rook's shape seems to have been motivated by the chariot, but time goes by it change to castle. In Joseon BONGSUDAE(Beacon Mound) were used very well and symbolic Cultural Heritage.
PAWN / Cheomju HELMET (SOLDIER Helmet)
Pangbaesu was an infantryman who accounted for a significant portion of the Joseon army during the early Joseon period. They wore the Cheomju helmet and i motivated by that helmet.
