Ryanne Doherty's profile

Packaging & Form Follows Function

The simplistic yet sturdy triangular design of my package allows for a visually pleasing structure to be created, while also functioning to contain an object securely. Originally, I was going to have my package be circular, however wanted take a route that would be more challenging and require more practice with preciseness and measuring. I picture circular and triangular objects as quite opposites, making this piece even more interesting and ironic. A circular tube is built into the middle of the design to allow the roll to sit securely on it, and appear as it is floating. I was inspired by the brand Packagio as they managed to display an object with an open-faced triangle package. https://graphicriver.net/item/pistachio-packaging-template/2623020?s_rank=3. Throughout the early process of this project, I realizes my design was not sturdy enough. I began to construct small tabs, as seen on my die line, to be tucked into the tagboard and increase stability. The object of tape is minimal in itself, designed to be hidden and unseen. This is why I created a simplistic looking packaging that when dissected, shows the detailed  thought process by its creator.

I decided to go with a pastel color scheme throughout my design. Instead of continuing with the same pattern, I chose miscellaneous ones that all complimented each other well. I knew this choice would be interesting to photograph with a black background as the contrast is seen. With spring approaching and Easter near, I have seen these colors present in many designs lately, and wanted to incorporate them into my own work. I made these patterns non-symmetrical on purpose to follow the abstract theme the triangle poses. With such a simple item being displayed, I wanted the packing to be fun and creative, drawing eyes to itself.
