The Burma Shave project was based on vintage advertisements from the Burma Shave company. Burma Shave captured the public's attention by using up to six staggered highway billboards to spell out, often humorous rhymes, one line at a time. The last sign always ended with just one word, the name of the company. In this project, there are four panels on the outside of the pamphlet that spell out a phrase. The inside panels each contain one letter that spells out the last word of the chosen phrase. The imagery on the pamphlet must correspond to and enhance this phrase. Imagery can be photographs, graphics, or illustrations with added effects, such as duotone or masking, applied through Photoshop and Illustrator. All layout was completed within Indesign in 8 panels of 7 by 9 inches. The phrase I chose to use for my "Burma Shave" is a short poem by A.A. Milne. ""Halfway down the stairs is a stair where I sit. There isn't any other stair quite like it. I'm not at the bottom, I'm not at the top, so this is the stair where I always stop." It appealed to me in two ways, the potential for fun imagery, and that the simplicity of the rhyme was open for interpretation. I used a combination of hand drawn characters and internet sourced photographic backgrounds to show my take on the poem, which is the progression of time. The "Top" of the stairs is youth; as the girl and the puppy climb, even the color around them gets brighter. Their whole lives are still ahead of them. The "bottom" of the stairs is old age; a steady decline that comes after reaching the "top" and having had a life well lived. The color fades to black and white on the stairs as the old woman descends the stairs. The leash in her hand is the same leash that belonged to the puppy in the first image a nod to her childhood companion. The cover image has a dog (a cartoon version of my real life dog, Mo) sitting on the middle step. The "middle" is the time in between youth and old age where a little wisdom and comfort have been achieved, but there are still possibilities ahead. This is the step "where I sit". Cover 1 I wanted to really show the contrast between the gorgeous tones in the photographed stairs and the more flat illustrated dog on the cover. The text wraps around and frames the images and adds interest to the text here. This is the only full color background panel. The font is Garamond Pro in bold at 30 pts. Garamond is a classic, old style font that works well for the literary origins of the phrase.
Inside panels plus inner fold- The inside panel uses the same staircase imagery with a pantone monotone. The letters have a slight transparency.
