Circo de Québra is a project which makes artistic workshops and performances in alleys and stairways in the city's outskirt. Places, where artistic and cultural activities are not so frequent.

The project research the architecture of those spaces, observing potential stages for circus performances, and structural and artistic interventions (such as graffiti, urban gardens, or playground).

I have been collaborating with Circo de Québra, since its first intervention, back in 2016. I am responsible for all its visual design, having created the Logo, Posters, Social Media Posts and the website.

The Place

Alleys like the one above are common in the landscape of many outlying neighborhoods from São Paulo and other Brazilian cities. The project Circo de Québra takes advantage of the alley architecture, using the stairs as bleachers; the nearby houses as a point of electricity, and technical support; and the plateau as a stage.

The Circus

The Logo

For the project logo, retro typography was used to referring to the Circus' golden age. The process mixed digital and analogical technics. First, a draft of the logo was composed using digital typography. This draft was shared with the project's general director, then a second and more refined version was made with pens. The word 'Québra' is an abbreviation of 'Quebrada', which is a slang that means an outlying neighborhood. Also 'Quebrada' means 'broken'. In order to bring the urban feeling of the word 'Québra' and also referring to the movement of a circus curtain, the logo was crumpled, scanned, and edited on photoshop

For the project's visual identity, some paintings from the 'Québra' were made with nankin. The first drawing remotes to the alley perspective, and also to a circus curtain partially open.  The second one is a more zoom-out view of an outskirt neighborhood. Both drawings were used as composition elements at the project's website and communication.

The Website

Circo de Québra's website was made with few objectives in mind:
1 - Present the project for its audience, potential collaborators, and sponsors;
2 - Speak with the community about the next events;
3 - Save the live webinars made during 2021 (still in progress);
4 - Have a memorial about all the activities made by the project in its five years of existence;

The website is live and can be acessed here: Circo de Québra. There is a planned roadmap for improvements and new content on the website, and I plan to update this project's portfolio, once these improvements happen.
