I noticed how popular iPhone docks have become and decided to design a dock for all mobile phones. I wanted my design to be minimalistic, functional and portable.
After some rough sketching of possible shapes and ideas I decided on a simple cube cut diagonally, which would open up to hold the phone in its "V". I named it Cubey
The phone screen being angled upwards meant a back support was necessary, and I had to do a lot of planning due to phone shape and thickness being different for every model. I created a curved arm which slides out behind the phone. The curved design stops the arm sliding back in from the pressure of the phone being touched.
For thick phones like the iPhone 3G the arm doesn't need to slide out far, however the iPhone 5 is almost half as thick, so the arm needs to slide out further to reach its back.
Support for all phones requires a few different connections, which lead me to the idea of changeable adapters. I designed 5 separate adapters. These plug in to cubey making it compatible with most 3G and 4G phones.
This is the Mini USB 2.0 Slider Adapter
The many different widths of phones meant some of the phones wouldn't sit where I wanted them. Most of the phones causing this issue used Mini USB connections, so I made the position of the Mini USB within the adapter moveable. It can slide right for narrower phones, and slide left for wider phones.
