A series of artworks inspired by a trip to Yunnan province, China and a tradition originating from the Bai and Naxi ethic groups of the region.  Both groups adorn their house's rooftops with a guardian made from the same material as their roofing tiles, known as a 'tile cat’ or 瓦猫 (wǎ māo): something similar-looking to a cat is the most common design although the form is very fluid and open to a wide range of interpretations - the word cat is a slight misnomer and should not be taken literally. The only common attribute is the gaping mouth. Its purpose is to ward off or consume evils before they can enter the family home. These artworks are not depictions of Tile Cats, but are a derivation, inspired by the classic pose and designs of the traditional figures.

Drawn in ink with a Chinese calligraphy brush and coloured using Yunnan Pu'Er tea.
