The title is a reference to the historical Bonfire of the Vanities, which occurred during the year 1497 in Florence, Italy. Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican friar ordered the burning of objects that church authorities considered sinful, such as cosmetics, mirrors, books, and art. There have been numerous books and movies created that reference this historic event.
