SciArt: Fluorescent Microalgae

This is the same painting of a marine microalga (Prymnesium neolepis), viewed under three different light conditions (from left to right): UV illumination, complete darkness and normal daylight.

The first image reflects the way these microalgae behave under a microscope when stained with a fluorescent dye. The second image, taken in complete darkness, plays with the idea of bioluminescence - a trait exhibited by certain marine algae and manifesting as the "glowing sea". In this case, it is imitated with the use of phosphorescent resins. The third image, taken in the daylight, is here to show just how drastically different can the same object look when viewed under different kind of light.
