Acelga is the result of a 7-week academic project directed by Moisés Hernández and Ian Ortega, in which  industrial design students worked with Yolcan, an organization dedicated to the care and monitoring of tradition of cultivating in the Chinampas from Xochimilco, Mexico City.
This project was to help Yolcan with a transport that will allow them to move safely their products from one place to another but also ensure that the people who visit their Chinampa have an unique experience.
Yolcan has two programs to support the chinampera tradition, the first is the sale of vegetables, fruits and flowers in baskets through the internet and the second one consists in the implementation of culinary experiences inside the "trajinera" (mexican small boat) and through the Xochimilco canals, in order that they know the benefits and tradition of harvest in this way.
We designed a "trajinera"  thinking in the diverse activities that Yolcan organize in the canals with easy-to-move furniture that would allow them to accommodate it at their convenience, either for the transport of their products or for the experiences. The colors we chose are inspired by its main product, the Acelga (chard).
The construction of this boat allowed us to learn about the ancient fabrication techniques and how to combine them with the actual ones.
