Concept and Objective:
I created twelve icons to represent women. These icons are meant to be used at a women's conference. They can be used on pins, cards, containers, and so on. Every woman is beautiful in their own unique way and that is what these icons represent because of how different each style is on each icon.
The Beginning of the Sketches
I drew whatever was on my mind even if it didn't relate to the theme of the icons. I continued to doodle and sketch until I started to get a closer idea of what I would start to use. I liked the idea of representing women in a good way, so I started sketching some more in that theme.
Continued Sketches
Once I got the idea I wanted to go with, I drew different sketches of that one idea and I came up with the 25 sketches above. From here I chose my favorite options from these 25 sketches and started working on them in Adobe Illustrator.
First Draft
At first I thought I would want to color in the hair for the icons. After I finished four icons, I knew I had to change something. My eyes didn't know where to focus when I looked at the icons.
Second Draft
I took the color out of the hair and that made the blue, green and purple color pallet stand out more, which is what I was hoping for. I was happy with the direction I was going, but there were things I had to change. For example, the top left icon needed the details changed in the hair for it to look less like the symbol of an afro and look more like a real afro. I also decided to change the random pieces of hair that were on the top right and bottom left icons so they looked like they were supposed to be there. Finally, I changed the style of the lips. I took a critique of focusing on the highlights of the lips instead of outlining the entire shape. I fixed this by having a dark color on the top lip and a lighter color on the bottom lip.
Final Icons
Above are the final 12 icons. They meet the objective because the icons have a bold color pallet that represents women as unique and courageous individuals. They also represent women differently while also expressing that each is beautiful in their own way. The icons portray this by having different hairstyles for each icon.
