History of the Gamma Beta Phi Society

Virginia Business College president Gene Couch completed his Ed.D. in educational leadership at East Tennessee State University. Gene Couch is affiliated with several Greek organizations, including the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the Gamma Beta Phi Society.

Gamma Beta Phi was first established in 1964 as the collegiate branch of the high school honor society, Beta Club. The society was founded to promote opportunities for leadership development and to support academic excellence. The society's name roughly translates into "education and love create the foundation for a fulfilled life." Since its founding, Gamma Beta Phi has expanded to more than 100,000 members at universities and institutions across the country. In 2017, Gamma Beta Phi relocated its headquarters to Knoxville, Tennessee.

All members commit to a lifetime of servant leadership and community service. The society has previously collaborated with nonprofit organizations such as Heifer International and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. All chapters also compete in the National Project competition which challenges members to complete as many service hours as possible.
