What Is Retinopathy of Prematurity?

At Retina Associates, the highly qualified staff of Ophthalmologists/Retina Specialists provide medical and surgical treatment for a variety of conditions affecting the retina and macula. Based in Tucson, Arizona, the clinic also participates in clinical research trials and provides professional training for ophthalmology residents. Dr. Cameron Javid leads the offices of Retina Associates while treating patients with various ophthalmologic disorders, including pediatric retinal conditions.

Pediatric retinal conditions are disorders that cause damage to a child’s retina. Retinal conditions present specific symptoms in children such as the appearance of a white pupil, photophobia, sudden flashing lights, and night blindness. One of the more severe pediatric conditions is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

ROP affects babies who are born prematurely, before 31 weeks. As a result, abnormal growth of blood vessels inside the eye may cause impairment of the baby’s visual development. Risk factors such as low birth weight, concomitant anemia, and breathing problems are associated with ROP.

Depending on the stage of ROP, different treatment modalities can be utilized, with the key objective of stopping the abnormal blood vessel growth. The most common treatments are laser therapy, cryotherapy, and intraocular injections.
