Greenland’s Siorapaluk Offers a Unique Travel

The president of KNI Communications in Chicago, Sean Tenner leads the company in its mission to bring attention to issues that involve hate and intolerance. He also helped found The Abolition Institute in Chicago, an organization that fights slavery in West Africa. Sean Tenner enjoys traveling to remote regions of the world and recently made a trip to the northernmost village in the world - Greenland’s Siorapaluk.

Inhabited by Inuits (its indigenous people) for over 4,000 years, Siorapaluk is the last outpost to the north with flush toilets and electricity. The village sits at the foot of sandstone mountains of various colors when not covered with snow. A small, white-sand beach, or Siorapaluk, fronts the village and gives it its name. The foot of the glacier at Robertson Fjord is nearby. Dogsled trips in the tourist season provide extra income for the locals, who still sustain themselves mainly on available Arctic resources.

Wildlife along the coast includes seals near the glacier and arctic hares in the early summer. An auk nesting ground, home to thousands of the tiny birds during the nesting season, is about five minutes away by boat. Other attractions of Siorapaluk include boat tours, sled tours, and views of icebergs, glaciers, and the midnight sun.
