IHRSA Lobbies for Economic Relief for Health Clubs

The chief executive officer of the award-winning fitness chain Athletic Apex, Randall Hunt has led the company for 15 years. Beginning with a small startup business, Randall Hunt grew the enterprise into a multimillion-dollar business that was named one of the best new brands in the health and fitness industry by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).

The largest health club organization in the world, IHRSA represents and advocates for the interests of the health and fitness industry. During the coronavirus pandemic, the Association has continually pressed Congress to pass additional relief for the health club industry.

Fitness clubs have suffered substantial economic impacts from the virus since they rely on in-person activity for revenue. In addition to reduced revenue, health clubs have increased costs for personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, reconfigurations to permit social distancing, upgrades or replaced HVAC systems, and more.

As a solution, IHRSA backs The Health and Fitness Recovery Act, which would create a $30-billion fund for the health and fitness industry to help defray some of the costs and losses associated with the pandemic. IHRSA projects that one in four clubs could permanently close, said Helen Durkin, IHRSA’s executive vice president of public policy. Congress must pass the bill to keep the benefits that health and fitness clubs play in physical, mental, and social health and overall well-being, she added.
