Miniature portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne | acrylic and gouache on canvas
As part of a series of studies, this small portrait looks at one face of Jeanne Hébuterne. Described as gentle, shy, quiet, and delicate, she became a principal subject for Modigliani's art, and seen as a muse.
Often overshadowed by him for this reason, she was of course also a painter herself.
Jeanne killed herself two days after Modigliani's death.

She originally took on a different form, much more in the style of Modigliani and taking from a Picassoesque mask, but the style was not appropriate for this painting. I wanted to show more of the shy soul inside. This is also reflected in the unobtrusive size of the painting.
