Today, Stowe is characterized by its exclusive Lodge, but nearly 257 years earlier, the town was a small agricultural community. As the only ski-in/ski-out property that accommodates a variety of tastes and budgets, the lodge is responsible for making the town one of the most exclusive in Vermont.

Stowe was chartered in 1763, but would not receive its first settlers until 30 years later. By the 1800s, the town had grown to 316 people. The town, which has the largest area in Vermont (50,000 acres), was supported through the agricultural and lumber industries. In the beginning, agriculture primarily consisted of sheep farming, then switched to dairy sometime after.

However, as land was cleared and farming decreased, the town would re-invent itself into a summer resort town. At least three hotels had been constructed by the mid-1800s, and summer tourism was an essential part of the town’s economy.

In 1913, three Swedish families would begin another transformation for this small hamlet nestled in Vermont. They came with long wooden boards that contained upturned edges, and the townspeople were immediately taken in with the equipment and skiing.

It would not be until two decades later, after the Great Depression, that Stowe would build the infrastructure for skiing. The Bruce Trail was built in 1933, and this was followed by a series of projects that would include other hotels and diversions centered on skiing.

Nearly a hundred years (in 2014) after the Swedish family visited, Lodge at Spruce Peak would construct the Spruce Peak Center, phase one of an ambitious development. Completed in 2016, the project is considered the state’s largest geo-thermal development and an integral part of the Stowe community.
