STORIES OF A JOURNEYMAN
A one of a kind Design-Journey
A one of a kind Design-Journey
"Dudes and Dudettes,
I am taking it to the road, traveling as a Design-Journeyman to work for food and acommodation all over the planet. Follow my stories about the projects I do and the adventures I experience."
Within the framework of the tradition of a journeyman, Fabian Sixtus Körner is travelling the world.
Wikipedia defines the original Journeyman tradition: In parts of Europe, as in later medieval Germany, spending time as a journeyman (Geselle), moving from one town to another to gain experience of different workshops, was an important part of the training of an aspirant master. Carpenters in Germany have retained the tradition of traveling journeymen even today, although only a small minority still practice it. In later medieval England, however, most journeymen remained as employees throughout their careers, lacking the financial resources to set up their own workshops[citation needed]. In France, they were known as Compagnons.
The idea is to translate the travel rules to today´s demands and adapt them to my job as a designer.
Some things concerning this plan are well defined, others will be a surprise for you and a big adventure for myself.
An Online-Blog will be a companion of me and my experiences, imponderabilities and barriers.
As I don´t belong to a craft and not being a craftsman in a traditional sense but graduated in Architecture and Design, I can´t and won´t implement this traditional rules one-to-one. Yet I tried to include the most important terms into my plan and adapted them to today’s demands.
I´ll spend my days in architecture- and design-companies, help pulling of design festivals and being the 3rd eye for Photographers instead of working in workshops or on building sites. I publish a blog instead of writing a diary. Fully equipped with my own notebook including all necessary programmes and Camera equipment, I am ready for action. As I am working for board and lodging, I don´t draw any salary.

Since my journey began I have climbed 30m high bamboo structures as an architect for David Chipperfield Architects while re-designing the ancient British buildings at the Bund, one of Shanghai’s prime commercial locations. I have shaken the hands of various ministers and other high- ranking politicians as the International Ambassador for the Kuala Lumpur Design Week and traveled thousands of kilometers through India to get to a place called Jaaga, where I created the framework for a vertical garden system. I have been smuggled into Alexandria’s free-trade zone to design a new corporate identity for DeBirs Yachts, one of the leading yacht shipyards in the Mediterranean, worked along-side top-notch African photographers to create the biggest African photography festival in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, hosted an urban photography workshop in Bangalore, hung out with an australian Record Label while working as photographer, videographer and musician, curated the Wira Foto Fest in Malaysia, was invited to be the judge in a model competition in Kuala Lumpur, assisted a beauty- and fashion photographer in San Francisco, shot a video-documentary in Havana to cover today's living situation in Cuba's capitol and shot another video documentary about cockfighting in the Domenican Republic.
