Since 2018, Dr. Brian Klagges has served as the chief of anesthesia at the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of New England. In addition to his work with the center, Dr. Brian Klagges also is a paid consultant who trains physicians to use minimally invasive procedures to treat spinal conditions. Brian Klagges, MD is a paid consultant for Vertos Medical.

Vertos Medical, Inc. is considered a leader in the innovation of minimally invasive treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) which removes the causes of stenosis through a hole that is no larger than a baby aspirin. The minimally invasive procedure requires no stitched, implants, anesthesia, or overnight stay.

Since December 2019, Vertos Medical has been involved in a randomized, controlled study on the procedure, which incorporates Fitbit data to assess the quality of life and clinically-validated, patient-reported pain outcomes to assess the procedures efficacy. Patients aged 50 to 80 who reside in 19 places around the country will be observed for two years to see the procedure’s effectiveness.

The procedure has been performed on 25,000 people as of December 2019, and its effectiveness and safety have been researched in 13 clinical studies and published in 20 publications. One patient reported that the procedure has been life changing, allowing her to participate in social activities she previously could not because of back pain. Plagued by lower back pain, Martha Ballard, 69, reported she recovered quickly after having the procedure, and the mild procedure allowed her to return to her activities of cooking and hanging out with friends.
