Sustained Investigation #2

For my next piece in my sustained investigation, I once again asked the question: what does a child's imagination look like? I decided to go with the idea of children that are imagining flying on butterflies and exploring the world.
First, I wanted to make an elaborate background out of many different popular places to visit in the world. I collected many different images and masked them together. I decided on these places because I always hear many people talking about them and these are the types of places that came to my head when I thought of what places kids would want to visit.
Next, I cut out the butterflies and placed them in the piece. I decided to use the gallery filter "cutout" on the butterflies. I used this filter to make them look more animated to make it easier to understand that they aren't real butterflies, but more of the type of butterflies seen in a child's imagination. Next, I noticed that the top left butterfly had a little different color combination than the other two, so I used brightness and contrast in order to make the butterfly match the others.
Next, I decided to turn the colors of the different places to black and white. I felt like the colors of the background took away from the main focus of the butterflies which gave me the thought of changing it to black and white. The main focus of this piece is the children imagining they are flying on butterflies, so I decided it was necessary to change the background black and white.
For my next step, I found pictures of little kids crawling and placed them so it looked like they were holding on to the butterflies. I also used a filter on the boys to make them more animated. I thought of this idea because since it is their imagination, I thought it made sense to make them look like they would be in a child's imagination.  Then, I also added a child in the other butterfly and made it as though he was holding his hands up and having a lot of fun traveling on a butterfly. To make it more realistic, I added shadows underneath the two children who were sitting on the butterflies, and added shadows in between the other boy and the butterfly to show depth.
This is my final product of a piece of my sustained investigation.
