Monkeys of Japan

Japanese Macaques and their sub-types can be found throughout 3 of the 4 main islands of Japan: Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
You most likely know them from the infamous Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture where the monkeys bathe in a hot spring in winter. Some pictures of this series are from this very park, although none of the monkeys felt like bathing that day. It simply wasn't cold enough, I guess, although I nearly froze my hands and feet off while waiting for them to hop in the spring.
The other pictures of this series are from Hakodate in Hokkaido and Kojima Island in Miyazaki prefecture. In Hakodate, the monkeys are not wild but live in an enclosure on the grounds of the Tropical Botanical Garden. They also have a hot spring there and the monkeys use it so extensively, that they lose their fur. They simply don't need it anymore to help against the cold.
The monkeys on Kojima Island live untouched by human interference, apart from some researchers of Kyoto University and occasional tourists like me.
