My Idea for this project was to bring awareness to those who have to deal with ADHD. Much of my research went in to looking at images that seemed very overwhelming and difficult to look at and understand. That is the premise of what I was trying to do with this sculpture. I wanted to create something that someone could interact with and walk through and just be completely encompassed by what was around them. I wanted the outside to be an elegant and functional piece in a public space, yet the inside is something that is overwhelming to look at and difficult to physically walk through because of the curvature of the arc.
This sculpture was intended to overwhelm those who walk through it so I wanted something large. I utilized the idea of size by creating a relatively small arc that sat under a seemingly floating slab that was much longer than the arc to give the viewer a sense of danger and caution. I made it seem that once the viewer had walked through the arc, the fear was not over. The underside of the large slab was done in such a way to create a sense of claustrophobia in a way by have large rectangular cubes seem like they are call towards the viewer in a non-sensical sort of manner.
The idea of "form follow function" is difficult to comprehend as it is very subjective to the person that is trying to define it themselves. For me, "form" was the outer shell and just the elegance and beauty that comes from any piece regardless of its intentions or meanings. "Function" on the other hand was the not only the message itself but the feelings the artist was trying to leave the viewers with which is a much deeper concept than "form." Function to me was challenging to create because it was something intangible. Especially from creating these in a 3D modeling program, it made it even more difficult to comprehend. So for the idea of "form follows function," I think much of it has to do with the ability for an artwork to convey a message and only then after can the physical structure of it start to make sense.
