PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

The Star Tribune's coverage of the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine has been referred to by some in the industry as the gold standard for how to cover a big event. Our two-part, 56-page preview of the tournament included one page for every hole of the golf course. We spent hours at Hazeltine. Highlights posted here include the two preview covers, a doubletruck on Tiger Woods (done entirely by me), a sample of those hole-by-hole breakdowns, a few pages from the daily coverage, and a cover and doubletruck from our summer preview of golf.

Beautiful photograph by Tom Wallace, who spent hours at Hazeltine capturing wonderful images of the course.
I did the photo edit for this cover and wrote all the display type.
I researched, wrote and designed this doubletruck on all things Tiger.
We had ads at the bottom of these pages, one for every hole on the course.
Cover from the last day of the tournament, which turned into an epic battle between unheralded Rich Beem and Tiger. Somehow, Beem wound up on top.
The idea for this daily page about Tiger's every move was conceived in a planning meeting about two months before the tournament.
Back page poster of the winner, with a fantastic photograph by Jeff Wheeler.
Detail of the graphic at the bottom of the poster, which showed how Beem scored on every hole each of the four days of the tournament.
It was a summer like no other for golf in the Twin Cities. Tom Wallace and I came up with this photo illustration for the season preview.
Great inside feature where we picked 18 holes from 18 different Minnesota courses that would be a great challenge for Tiger.
Detail of the above doubletruck. We picked a caddie for Tiger at each course and for each hole and had them comment on how he would play it.
