In 2008, we redesigned the Los Angeles times in less than five weeks. One of the biggest changes was the usage of color in flags, including reversed out versions for Sundays. We redefined the color palette to reflect the culture and earth tones of Southern California. From top, Hermosa Blue, Vasquez, Coulter Pine, Red Carpet, Luminous and Big Bear.

We drilled down way beyond cosmetic changes for the Star Tribune redesign. It was really a remaking of the paper, including new ways to tell stories and present information. The final three sets of pages show some of that thinking. Here, a before and after weather page where the new forecast included daily highs and lows that were color coded. Weather is a huge deal in Minnesota.
Instead of Funeral Notices, we changed the name to Remembering. Such a better way to communicate such important information for family and friends.
If there was an award for degree of difficulty for a redesign, the movie guide would win hands down. We had to convince advertising and the theaters to allow us to do the listing my location rather than by theater, a huge win for the readers.
