Working with Swiss illustrator Stephan Walter on this project was a ton of fun — and a bit of a challenge. He loves the NBA's Spurs, but his knowledge of college basketball was limited.

Art direction isn't always easy. This is a good example of that. Editors were reluctant about this piece by Dan Page about the steps toward purchasing a home in foreclosure. We thought it was dead on. And it won multiple illustration awards.

Sometimes the perfect visual falls right into your lap. Such was the case with this photo I found at the Minnesota Historical Society. My good friend Jerry Zgoda took things a step further and caught up with the boy for a nice little feature on Page 2 of our exhaustive coverage of the 2004 NHL All-Star Game.

One-day illustration turnaround? Robert Carter was up for the challenge. Although he was running errands at the time I called him, he returned to his studio and produced this vision we had for the day after Magic Johnson's group bought the Dodgers.

I love stylized logos and have created many during my career. This two are part of a huge set I made for the Los Angeles Times. There are hundreds of them.

I do love a challenge. Worked with French illustrator Florian Nicolle on these two pieces for a college football preview.

Illustration I created for the Minneapolis Star Tribune about Clint Eastwood's "Letters from Iwo Jima."

Apologies for the poor image quality here, but this was from 1999. I remember this shoot with Star Tribune photographer Carlos Gonzalez like it was yesterday. The stretch of dirt road south of Minneapolis included a not-so-friendly pit bull.
