Nomads of Mongolia - Eagle Hunters

Nomads of Mongolia - The Last Eagle Hunters of Mongolia

The Eagle Hunters are nomadic families living in the remote Bayan Olgii region in western Mongolia. During the summer months, the nomads search for the freshest pasture to feed their livestock, while in winter time, when the skin of their pray is the thickest, they take advantage of the snow and of the cold to hunt with their golden eagles.

The hunting process takes part at dawn in the highest rugged peaks of these valleys. The hunters usually stride in small groups of around three, taking their eagles high into the mountains so that they can scan the valleys below for foxes, wolfs, rabbits and other animals.

Once the hunter spots an animal, he takes the cap off the fierce bird’s head and releases her. The hunter then proceeds to echo a characteristic sound so that the eagle understands its time to charge.

With this series of images my intention was to document and portray the life of the last families of Eagle Hunters of Mongolia.
