FASHION DESIGN CONTEST
BLOSSOM
Blossom is a project developed for the Bordado de Castelo Branco e a Moda contest.
With my participation I intended to enhance the traditional embroidery of my portuguese hometown, Castelo Branco, and reinvent it through a contemporary language and commercial look, without losing the historical, thematic and artisanal richness that it represents.
My approach focused on researching and analysing some of the main elements present in the embroidery and its symbology. It was possible to identify an interesting and repeating theme among some of the figures, related to life. The tree of life, which can symbolize survival and renewal of life itself, the Albarrada, that appears as a symbol of fertility and the pomegranate, that represents the promise of abundant life. I decided to approach this topic and try to represent nature and the abundance of life in it.
The simplicity of shapes in the final garments intends to provide versatility and functionality so a greater number of people are able to include Castelo Branco's embroidery in their daily lives.
