The competition requires the redesign of the historical Eleftherias (Liberty) Square, in the city center of Thessaloniki. The square today is used as a carpark, but through its redesign, the Municipality of Thessaloniki aims to convert the place into an area of green and recreation that will be offered back to pedestrians, as well as to transform the square into an entrance/gate of the city via the seafront. The project includes the increase of the existing green and the emergence of the historic memories related to the Square through bioclimatic design.
The current proposal aims to upgrade the overall situation of the city of Thessaloniki, a city that suffers extremely from lack of public spaces and pedestrian zones, by providing a green public square for relaxation and recreation of the inhabitants. The main concept and effort of this proposal focuses on creating a “framed” public platform, combined with the creation of a welcome area for the western entrance to the city. The design focuses on the visual relief of the city towards the waterfront, by “framing” the view from the city to the waterfront. Hence, by creating a “Blue Window”, combined with a pleasant public space, enhances the living of the inhabitants and in extent, the living of the city itself.
