Modern Dog, a design firm based in Seattle, has been fighting a copyright battle for over a year against two colossal corporations: Target and Disney. In 2008, Modern Dog published their very first book that chronicled the past twenty years of their work. The book had two sections (the inside of the front and back covers) that featured illustrations of beloved dogs - their own dogs, dogs of friends, made up dogs, etc. A few years later, it came to their attention that their dog illustrations had been printed and sold as t-shirts, which was also part of an advertising campaign for a movie.

After seeing Robynne Raye (one of the two owners at Modern Dog - Michael Strassburger is the other) speak at an AIGA San Francisco copyright infringement lecture, I wanted to create an illustration in honor of Modern Dog's courage and their choice to fight for their creative rights.

AIGA San Francisco has done a wonderful job in compiling supportive comments from well-known designers, which can be viewed HERE.

Modern Dog's battle is paramount to not only the design industry, but to the rest of the creative world. Their fight is our fight.
