Mulheres escalpeladas em acidentes de barco na Amazônia perdem o cabelo, a saúde e o amor próprio
Women scalped in boat accidents in Amazon lose their hair, health, and self-love.

Maionese, repórter do UOL Notícias, encontrou três mulheres com muito para contar e dispostas a darem cara à essa matéria. A história delas por si só já era muito forte, e o meu desafio era fazer com que essa força fosse representada visualmente na matéria, porém havia um pequeno contratempo: não tínhamos fotos produzidas por um fotógrafo profissional (o próprio repórter fotografou as entrevistadas).
Maionese, a reporter for UOL Notícias, found three women with a lot to tell and with willing to shape this article. Their story itself was already strong, and my challenge was to make this strongness visually represented in the article, but there was a small setback: we did not have photos produced by a professional photographer (the reporter himself photographed the interviewees).
Sabendo desse empecilho, comecei a pensar em soluções gráficas para deixar o retrato das três mulheres com mais peso e unidade visual. Eu queria ter algum elemento que remetesse à ação de arrancar igual à do escalpelamento.
A primeira ideia, seguindo essa linha de pensamento de arrancar, foi rasgar tiras de papel das fotografias. Fiz alguns testes no Photoshop e mostrei para a equipe avaliar o potencial disso.
Knowing this obstacle, I started to think about graphic solutions to make the photos of the three women with more strength and visual unity. I wanted some element that referred to the action "take off" just like the action of scalping.
The first idea, following the "take off" thing, was to tear strips of paper from the photographs. I did some tests in Photoshop and showed them to the team, so they could evaluate the potential of it.
Conversamos bastante e chegamos à conclusão de que uma edição desse tipo estava entre o aceitável e o mau gosto; fora que parte do rosto das personagens ficava oculto com esse efeito. Portanto, bora pensar mais um pouco!
Foi então que pensei "E se ao invés de replicar a ação do trauma (o arrancar), eu trabalhasse com as marcas que o escalpelamento deixava nas mulheres?". Daria para imprimir os retratos, amassá-los e fotografar os papéis amassados.
We discussed a lot and conclude that this kind of effect was between acceptable and bad taste; other thing is that part of the women's faces was hidden with this effect. So, let's think a little more!
So I thought "What if instead of replicating the action of trauma (take off), I worked with the marks that scalping left on women?". It would be possible to print the photos, wrinkle them and photograph the wrinkled papers.
O resultado agradou bastante: as fotos em PB + a textura que conseguíamos com as dobras do papel = imagens fortes e dramáticas.
Para deixar isso ainda melhor, pensamos em fazer as imagens em stop motion com o papel sendo desamassado e a foto ficando visível. Pronto! Tínhamos nas imagens a mesma narrativa do texto: o trauma, a superação e a convivência com as marcas.
The result pleased everybody: B&W photos + texture we get with the folds of the paper = strong and dramatic images.
To make it even better, we thought about making the images in stop motion with the paper being straightened and the photo being visible. That's it! We had the same narrative in the images as the text: the trauma, the overcoming and the life with marks.
Com a ideia aprovada, contei com o Lucas Limas fotografando e me ajudando a criar o efeito do stop motion.
Trabalhamos uma animação para cada uma das mulher, variando a cor do papel ao fundo. Fizemos, também, uma cena das três fotografias juntas para a capa da reportagem.
With the idea approved, Lucas Lima photographed and helped me to create the stop motion.
We made an animation with the photo of each woman, only changing the color of the paper in the background, and we also made an animation with the photos of the three women together to use as cover of the article.
Esta foi uma daquelas histórias marcantes que tive a sorte de ajudar a contar e que gerou reconhecimento dentro de casa: fomos vencedores da categoria "Melhor História" do 2º Prêmio UOL de Conteúdo.
This was one of those remarkable stories that I was fortunate enough to help to tell and that generated recognition at the company: we won the 2º Prêmio UOL de Conteúdo in the category "Best Story".
