IDP (Integrated Design Project): ART STUDIOS

PROJECT BRIEF

INTRODUCTION
Art Studios have been designed by many architects at different periods and in different styles. They remain however a functional brief driven by space and light.

SITE AND CONTEXT
The site is in the heart of historic Lincoln with views southwards across the City and diagonally towards the cathedral from roof level.

The project can be seen as an extension of the adjoining Art building but should have its own front door and servicing systems. It may provide facilities which can be shared with its neighbour by virtue of being conceived as a new building.

Large trees provide shade in summer, these should be protected.

Some limited space for cars and vehicle servicing should remain at ground level.

The visibility of the site is low as it is in a cul de sac. This allows an opportunity for a building to be designed to suit its purpose and reflect the time in which it is to be designed and constructed.

PLANNING AND INTERIOR
The AAD building, designed by Ric Mather has a generous atrium and daylighting is generously to be found within the building although not consistently within the studio spaces. Its extension will rely for its circulation on double loaded internal corridors and will be predominantly a building with artificial lighting and mechanical systems.

With this project you are asked to explore bringing light (and ventilation) into the interior of the plan on a constrained site through shafts/ lightwells/ stairways as well as through well managed windows and openings within the various facades.

A clear distinction in your work should be made between daylight (from the North is traditional popular for studios and from a Standard Overcast Sky) and sunlight which can enliven interiors but also cause glare.
Studios should benefit from light from perimeter windows and borrowed light from shafts if possible.  The height of these rooms should be considered especially at perimeter conditions.

EXTERIOR MASSING AND EXPRESSION
The building should be scaled to fit in with its surroundings. Its materials and expression should be based on a respectful conversation with its older surroundings. This does not mean that it copies their materials, construction or expression.

Larger than traditional windows may be framed by architectural elements which may provide help modulate/ elect/ diffuse light.

Facade studies showing proportional relationships, options etc. should be part of your design process. Sufficient allowance for ventilation through opening windows or panels is to be made.
