Iannis Xenakis
Key Ideas
Iannis Xenakis was a Greek composer and architect who measured the world around him through his music. His work was considered "Out of the ordinary" (Service, 2013) as he gave the sounds he heard a measurement and looked for mathematical relationships within them.
Therefore, Xenakis analyses the architectural measurements of the infrastructure around him such as shapes they made and linked it to the instruments he used.
Analysis
His piece 'Pithoprakta' created an expressive tone with different dynamics throughout the composition. The instruments were created with numerous layers to build intensity with natural and mechanical sounds.
Reflection
In my own sound, I was inspired by Xenakis' percussion and hollow sounding instruments. I focused on two instruments and layered them to create an expressive atomsphere.
