Ideation & Implementation

These are comparision images from our early ideation to the actual completed room in Hunt Library. Early ideation images were modeled and painted by Jordan Lang and served as the inspiration for the area.

GAMELAB - James B. Hunt Library

The James B. Hunt Library is a resource and technology rich entity at North Carolina State Universities Centennial Campus. Among the many educational resources, the library features a die-hard videogame fanboy's dream. A 16x9 tile touch-screen display with greater than 4k film resolution, almost every console on the market, including legacy gaming consoles along with connections for individual computers. This room embodies a part of Hunt where learning meets play. Hunt officials asked us to create a unique user experience and user interaction system which capitalized on their idea for the the space which was a place where students can play, learn, and work collaboratively. We began by creating a Charette which grew into stakeholder analysis, case studies, and more to ground the user experience.

Our design team were tasked with developing a unique user experience, interaction, and service touchpoints that would be beneficial for the Gamelab. Furthermore had to emphasized the roles in which the library had for the space which was collaboration, innovation and play. We started off by providing Hunt with a Charette which showed possible  usage of space, stakeholder research and user experience maps which we would use to ground future iterations. From the beginning we wanted to set the stage the the Gamelab stood with Hunt library but also seperate so we decided to make an identity for the space that coincided with the branding guidelines already laid down by Hunt but stand separate so that once you users entered the space they felt  as though they were in their own section of the library. We designed furniture, placement of the furniture for accessiblility. We created a sub-brand of the room, worked with AMX touch panel displays as a central library control structure, created a video game and a touch screen mini game. While the final designs were all speculative, we focused on individualized user needs to create a holistic system that created the Gamelab experience.
