Submission for an art challenge by artist and musician Dandy Wellington. #BlackApparelArts asked artists to reimagine historical fashion imagery with black people.
People of color have been severely unrepresented in fashion illustrations. (The first mainstream magazine published for black women was Essence in 1970!) For my contribution, I wanted to recreate an image that might be seen in a women's magazine of the twenties. These illustrations showcased romanticized fashion as art rather than garments you could actually purchase. Figures created in Procreate, background in Photoshop/Illustrator!
