The 2020 MLB Draft took place virtually this past June. Usually stretching for 40 rounds, it consisted of only five rounds this year due to changes stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the draft’s shorter length, the Mariners had six selections, one of which came due to the team being granted a competitive-balance selection between the second and third rounds.

With its first pick, sixth overall, Seattle selected pitcher Emerson Hancock. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander was a Second-Team All-American at the University of Georgia in 2019, a season in which he recorded a 1.99 earned run average (ERA) to go along with 97 strikeouts through 90-and-one-third innings pitched. He was projected to be the top pick in the draft prior to the 2020 season.

The Mariners subsequently selected Texas A&M outfielder Zach DeLoach with their second pick in the draft. DeLoach batted .421 with six home runs and 17 RBIs during the shortened 2020 campaign. Previously, the left-hander stood out for his impressive hitting performance in the 2019 Cape Cod League. Following DeLoach, Seattle spent its remaining picks on right-handed pitcher Connor Phillips, second baseman Kaden Polcovich, third baseman Tyler Keenan, and right-handed pitcher Taylor Dollard.
