INVISIBLE CITIES

STUDENT WORK, 2020
Invisible Cities is a novel by Italo Calvino, which tells stories of the various cities Marco Polo encounters. Polo then recounts these tales to the emperor. Each city has its own unique traits and personalities that reveal real-world truths, but the overarching theme of the novel is how we are tricked into a false sense of reality when we aren’t told the full story and what remains untold is invisible.

Each city in this booklet has its own personality and secret. I used illustrations to convey important characteristics of each city but paired it with some experimental type. The pop-outs in the booklet add depth and guide the reader through the type, as you would guide the reader through an adventure. The type and pop-outs themselves further add to visually aid in explaining and illustrating the lessons learned and stories told from each city Marco Polo encounters.
