Contemporary Apartment - Redesigned in Onyx

Contemporary Apartment Redesigned in Onyx
The apartment is located in a residential building in Uzice, west Serbia.
Originally this was just a half of a large apartment, and its previous owner divided it into two since it was easier to sell. My clients now own a small apartment with a large bedroom, bathroom and zig-zag walls separating them from their neighbor.  They wanted to redesign everything, yet  to keep the boundaries of the large bedroom, have a large bathroom, and have the kitchen, dining room and a living space with a sofa in the main room.
At first it seemed impossible without moving the walls, but eventually, with the help of Mikica Jovanovic, architect from Atelier Arcus, I came up with the solution. I suggested a bar as the central motif – a bar with the sink, a counter and the stove – which devides the kitchen space from the living and dining area.
To make the most of this relatively small space, we suggested a moderate combination of what we consider classical materials and modern design.
For the classic part we used a lot of granite and onyx bought at the Sumadija granit warehouse in Arandjelovac. The bar is completely covered in onyx and granite, with its one whole side from the floor to the ceiling in honey onyx. We also added granite stripes to the white ceramics floor.
And for the modern-design part, we used enhanced details, such as a black-plexiglass table, chrome – supported coffee table, red barstools, white synthetic leather sofa, zebra-textured chair and pillow, and as the focus that adds to contemporary dynamics, I suggested placing a large painting on the wall opposite the bar.
The apartment is to be completed due to June 2010.
