In January of 2020 I began a project documenting Wheaton Maryland, a section of Silver Spring, Maryland with about 45,000 people. Along with much of Montgomery County, Wheaton is statistically one of the most diverse areas in the entire country. It's also known for being a haven of diverse, independently owned restaurants and shops. But, like many of D.C.'s suburbs, it is gentrifying rapidly. With the influx of money comes the promises of new stores and businesses, along with the reality that some people will benefit more than others. My goal was to document how the area changed over the course of a single year- which businesses survived and thrived- and which ones didn't. What I couldn't have anticipated was how the area–and the entire world–would change. The first half of the year has come to a close and we're no closer to knowing how it will end than we were in January. The project is ongoing...
