  • This 01 min 15 s. slide presentation shows recent designs from studio DvanDirk.

The works are distinguished by their open design structure, which results from what designer Dirk Ploos van Amstel calls, ‘the white boxapproach’. The construction of the designs are never disguised but so clearly shown that even a child understand how they are put together.
We like to show how it works.
Many designs have dual functions, such as the MOEP, which combines a cradle and a rocking chair, the SEESAWSEAT, a seesaw and bench in one, and the garden bench HIGH FIVE with two footstools that double as side tables.

We are living in an era in which many products are offered to us as socalled black boxes, even as the complexity of these products increases dramatically.

The paradox here is that - partly due to the development of (graphical)user interfaces - the end user is more and more comfortable and at ease withusing products, while at the same time is less aware with the real, and oftencomplex mechanisms that lie behind them.
Seen from this perspective, it seems that today’s end-users are increasinglyout-of-touch with the products they use.

Our work is about demystification. The most striking element of our designsis that the most important mechanisms and constructions of the products aremade visible.
All products of DvanDirk are designed and made according to this whitebox-approach.
