Elyn Kazarian makes paintings, drawings and media art. By emphasizing aesthetics, she creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. These images are created by a means of improvisation. Intimacy and distance are shown together in a work. Easily carried by hand, the work challenges the notions of the heroic paintings done in the past that themselves challenged the nature of the cinematic screen. She is interested in the scale of the computer screen, and how people see images at a smaller scale as the years go by because of technological progression.
Her paintings and digital works sometimes radiate a cold and latent violence but also a sense of playfulness. At times, disconcerting beauty emerges. She is always questioning why painting is relevant today, and in what new ways the technological tools of today can help create a painting in a new context. The inherent visual seductiveness further complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning. By choosing mainly formal solutions, she seduces the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life.
The works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. Her creations at times reference recognizable form, but not for the most part. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.
