The common thread through my last 12 years as elation by design is creating living and dynamic environments, whether it's a sitting room or a digital space. As a result I've had my hand in many pots so to speak. In fact design is much like cooking, it's pragmatic (you need to eat), it's nurturing (your body requires healthy food to grow and re-fuel) and it's about capturing your imagination (that's where its power lies). And, any good cook or designer knows you've got to leave some room for the magic to happen.

My specific skills include digging down deep to understand the problem and articulate the new vision and execute from the ground up. The needs, goals and requirements are varied and each sector and channel - fashion, e-commerce, education, business-to-business, etc. have their unique challenges and constraints. But, it's our job to figure out what they are and how to make the best of them so they become strengths.

Sometimes what's needed is a name [trademarks & naming research and development), other times it's words [copywriting and content development], and other times it's creating or streamlining a platform or system [user interaction design], and then there are images and moving images [video and web design, photography], and then there are cool physical spaces [interior design and styling].
Mostly, a project will require a combination of all of these skills, but the key is holding the integrity of the vision despite the many changes and adjustments during the project.

In terms of working style, I believe in working in small teams of at least two people as it's important to mind meld in order to bounce off ideas, have a healthy counter weight, as well as to complement areas that are not my focus or strength. If I don't know something, then I'll let you know and we'll find the right people who do.

I should also mention that I've had formal training in a process called "goal-directed design" at Cooper Interaction Design where I was as an ethnographer and design communicator designing interfaces for complex business-to-business web and software applications. Read Less

In the last few years, I've focused on a passel of small businesses, which are often the most challenged to grow while holding on to their current customer base. One such company was Jan Michaels Jewelry who after 25 years of doing business in the San Francisco area did not have consistent marketing or a way to reveal what was truly special about her jewelry. Working closely together, Jan and I were able to capture and create through photography, language, and moving images, an enchanting online milieu for her customers around the world. Read Less
