I approach visual art as a form of non linear storytelling and am interested in exploring different research methods and formal approaches including web technology and digital imagery, as well as more traditional methods such as painting, drawing, sculpture & installation.
Though my work is process driven and materials oriented I am keen to explore and expand its conceptual basis. I am intrigued, for example by the existence of personal narrative within the formal structures of artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Joseph Cornell, and am equally compelled by the conceptually rigorous yet somehow entirely personal work of Susan Hiller.
In my own work I am keen to explore new ‘ways in’ which are driven by personal desire yet at the same time structured, rigorous, moving toward the universal. A hybrid coexistence of ideas and approaches best described by Svetlana Boym author of The Future of Nostalgia as ‘Off-Modern’:
‘Off-modern’ reflection does not try to cure longing with belonging and a remake of traditional yardsticks. Rather it produces offspring of thought out of those gaps and crossroads, opening up an alternative way to the intellectual history of modernity. I am currently working on a project called Nostalgia/Analgesic which explores the power and potential destructiveness of nostalgia and the role of art in untangling its meaning. I recently exhibited some work in progress for Nostalgia/Analgesic at my studio. Read Less
