Earlier this summer, a cult cartoon classic from the 1980s was revamped and it returned to cable television. The Thundercats was a dynamic anime series featuring a host of hybrid cat warriors, striving for peace in a sci fi world. The Cartoon Network channel currently airs new episodes of the action-adventure series every Friday.

After seeing the preview clips of the pilot episode for the new anime series several months ago, I decided to do some redesigns of the classic heroes from the original Thundercats cartoon. These images were posted in my DSNG blog, and later some of them were posted in my DA account. I started with teasers [dark blueprints], before showing the digitally colored character designs, painted in Photoshop.

Liono & the Thundercats Series was produced by Rankin/Bass Productions (they hold the Copyright, the same company that created the SilverHawks, TigerSharks and The Comic Strip); debuting in 1985, based on the characters created by Tobin "Ted" Wolf.
